Maple MuffinTop

Post by Woodland » Sat Mar 01, 2014 7:11 am

This is not a real review. I've had a bad surprise today. After finishing a nice Spicy Penne Pasta entree I wanted something sweet. There was a Menu 4 Maple Sausage MRE from 2010 in my bag and I decided to take the Maple muffin top from the menu. This MRE is loaded with sugar anyway (about 90 grams of sugar !!).
I opened the pouch and I found this:

My first reaction was  The first bad MRE item in my life!
It smelled as it looked. Rancid, not good at all..
In the pouch I saw something...mold :

I hope it's just an exception.I have some more MREs from 2010... I've had 7 year old dark brown bag MREs back in 99 and 2000 and many others since then but they were all fine....

Ouch...
Do you still have the case with the TTI on it?

Seems to be good:

The two cheese spread from this case were both nice&tasty.Three pound cakes, crackers and entrees too.
Must have been a problem by Sterling Foods while manufacturing.Nothing special. It happens sometimes.

Ameriqual did a good job.Neat package :)

Just out of curiosity...is it possible that recalled MREs or MREs that have failed at inspection somehow "get out" and emerge on Ebay or somewhere?
As I mentioned earlier I've never had any bad MRE item before.I'm just asking.

There might have been a small hole in the package after it got squeezed like that. I've had the muffin from early 2010 too and it was fine.

Sorry about your bad experience Woodland. What Unimproved was mentioning about there mebbe being a small hole in the pouch was kinda what happened with me and the dreaded Turkey, Diced w/Gravy from the 1980s brown pouch era. Our battalion preventative medicine officer (one of whose jobs was to investigate incidents like people getting sick from MREs), mentioned that sometimes the holes can be so tiny that nothing even leaks out, but bacteria can get in and do some nasty stuff.
