2008 Cheese and Veggie Omelet MRE

Post by RockyRaab » Wed Oct 09, 2013 11:04 am

My daughter found an MRE at a yard sale and bought it for me. This was a Menu 4 from Feb 2008, so I moved it to the front of my "Use Next" list. I had it yesterday while fishing. (No photos because it's quite a trick to unpack and prepare one of these things in a kayak even without the complication of a camera!) It contained:

Cheese and Veggie Omelet
Salsa Verde packet
Granola with blueberries
Cinnamon scone
Crackers
Apple butter
French Vanilla cappuchino
Acc Pack with cider
FRH
Bev bag

The 2008 menu list says it ought to have also contained a pop tart; I think that's an error, as that would be carb overkill with crackers, scone, and granola as well. I thought it odd that a breakfast menu wouldn't contain coffee, but it doesn't.

I started the omelet and cider in the FRH and ate the cinnamon scone while they heated. The scone was only mildly "cinnamony" and a bit dry, as are most MRE pastries. (Probably for the dual reason of spoilage resistance and to get troops to drink more.) It would have gone great with the cinnamon-heavy cider, had I not split those two up.

Most past reviews of MRE omelets say they are dreadful. I didn't think mine was that bad, even though it was nearly six years old. It was a lot like "steam table" scrambled eggs once I had mixed it up and added the salsa verde. I could taste the cheese but not the veggies; a dash of added salt/pepper might have helped. All in all, not that bad - especially compared to egg entrees from the 80s, which WERE dreadful. (But not nearly as dreadful as the horrible dehydrated eggs I endured in 'Nam!) It's probably moot because there are no longer any egg entrees offered on the military menu list.

As usual, I found myself satisfied after these few items. I saved the granola, crackers, apple butter, and cappuchino for another time.

Until next time, crisp salute to all my brothers.

Thank you for your review.

the very delicious to me hash browns

Also I really liked the scones

I only know the Mountain House dehydrated eggs :

How were that ones you got compared to these?

The powdered "eggs" we got in 'Nam came (IIRC) in giant tins and became a scrambled mess that tasted like tin. They had a distinct aftertaste to boot - something vaguely mossy. Ditto the powdered milk, the canned bacon, and the issued bread.

When our chow hall could get local bread it was great, as were any meals we could get off camp to enjoy downtown (the French taught the locals how to cook.)

I absolutely love the veggie omelets - as long as I only have one every now and then. I made the mistake of taking two with me on a camping trip once and the second one, although totally normal, was disgusting to me for some reason. I even find that although I love the first 3/4 of one of these I sometimes can't palate the last bite or two. Something in my brain says "That's Enough, no more thank you" and my tastebuds switch over to rejecting it.

On a random note, that bacon in the heater meal looks awesome!

I don't think we have to worry about it in the future. 2008 was the last year they've offered an egg/omelet item. Mine might have been the last one on earth, for all I know.

I look forward to trying a maple sausage one (2013 Menu 17) or a sausage and gravy (2013 Menu 4) because those are the only two real "breakfast" menus offered. That seems a bit odd to me with 24 total menus available. But I don't do the pickin' just the eatin'...

Awesome review Rocky! :D Somehow that cheese and veggie omelet looks alot better than the Doctor Seuss 1980 MCI menu#3 that I remember eating. We called it that because occasionally the eggs actually did look like the green eggs and ham from the story (and that was even if we did not get green paint flakes from the can into the food.)

How very kind of you, good sir. I'm new here, but I intend to participate often with reviews and observations.
