I'm travelling to Montreal and a friend of mine from there always wanted to try an MRE from the US. I plan to bring two bags of MREs in a check-in luggage bag, however, I'm unfamiliar with regulations for commercial airlines. This is my first time going outside of the country as well so everything is all new to me. I'm flying with United Airlines, but have a layover flight with Air Canada to Montreal itself. Will I be okay with bringing an MRE with me to Montreal?

The biggest issue you'll run into is the Declaration Card when you cross the border:
https://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publication ... 11-eng.pdf
If you check the box:
I am/we are bringing into Canada:
Meat, fish, seafood, eggs, dairy products, fruits,
vegetables, seeds, nuts, plants, flowers, wood,
animals, birds, insects, and any parts, products or
by-products of any of the foregoing.
You will be questioned. They might allow it, they might seize it.
Edit: Also, bring some for me

If you need hooking up with IMPs, there are a couple surplus store that could have, or I have some.

Also, depending on the MRE's you are bringing, they could include matches and FRHs... which are both big no-no's for air travel.

Are there laws in the US regarding liquids on planes? because they could consider the retort pouch as a liquid bag... I know a friend who had to throw away a cake because it had cream and they considered it a liquid...

You'll be fine with the food items, unless you run into a customs agent who doesn't know or care about the regs (always a possibility).

The matches are a problem. You could remove them from the ration before you pack.
