Post by NC_Hiker81 » Fri Jan 18, 2019 9:52 am

Just curious as to which US MRE menus are these two items found in ( apple cider and lemon tea mix) I’ve been wanting to try those for a long time now. Thanks

I think they've both been discontinued. At least I haven't seen either one in the last few years of production. It's a crying shame, they were both a needed change from the Tang or Prestone options.

Had a cider many moons ago, think it was a late 90s vegtable or beef stew tan bag ration (so after 1996). Someone here can answer better, but i think they stopped those drink packets in the mid 00s, but i may be wrong, and probably am.

2012 was the least year either of those items were included. Take a look at the accessory packet items listed for the 2012 menus: https://www.mreinfo.com/mres/mre-menus/mre-menus-2012/

Then take a look at the 2013 menus: https://www.mreinfo.com/mres/mre-menus/mre-menus-2013/

In my experience, the apple cider is exactly like the kind you can buy in the store. The lemon iced tea is unique, but I never cared for it since it's easy to dilute it by adding too much water. I think it requires only 6 ounces of water and if you're thirsty, that's not very much. I guess it was more for a caffeine boost than anything.

Is the apple cider like a typical thing in the US? I've been curious about it for some time but I've never got luck to have it in a ration... It's like mulled cider?
I have Spanish rations permanently, feel free to ask :!:

Apple cider is pretty common by me in the NorthEast US, because we have tons of apple trees, but it may be less common in othere areas. The powder was not even close to fresh cider. Cold fresh cider is pretty tasty.

The only powdered cider you can buy here is meant to be served hot. You are exactly right, Its called Mulled Cider. It is basically a spiced apple juice of sorts. "Mulling" spice contains stuff like cinnamon, clove, all spice, orange peel. Fresh cider does not normally contain these spices.

In spain we do cider mainly in the North, but we do it differently than the rest of the world, it's sour/tart and way less fizzy... I've never tried making mulled cider, I'll have to do it :)

Cider is not carbonated here but i know what u mean by fizzy. Most is more on the sweet side.
Local farmers make their own around here and it can be tart as well.

If u know what your doing, cider can be fermented into an adult beverage as well. Back in the 1800s, and likely much earlier, it was slightly alcoholic to make it last longer. The Brits perfected that...thanks guys.

Cider vinegar is great too

I think you mean applejack or hard cider, i have plans on making a similar thing, i love brewing and making that is just another experiment to do :D
You get regular cider and with a couple of tricks and tweacks you can get it to a much higher % of alcohol
