Did bagels ever make it into MREs or FSRs?

Post by Dvalin » Sun Jul 22, 2018 11:13 am

I've seen several referances to bagels on menus for FSRs and MREs, but I've never seen one and can't find any info on them.
Does anybody know if they ever made it to production and when?

Well according to MREInfo.com FSR Menu #8 is supposed to have a Plain bagel. To my knowledge I have never seen one in a MRE, however the kosher MRE's had bagel bites (civilian package). UGR A's used to have bagels too.

Just looked through a 2015 FSR case and there was nothing with a bagel in it :(

Yes. I had an unexpired first strike ration with a plain bagel in it a few years ago, I forget which specific ration, and other than the bagel I didn't like it and for what FSRs cost I should have. Like one of the couple FSRs I had had something that was roughly comparable to a 99c frozer burrito. The bagel didn't look like much, sort of like someone took a smallish bagel and squashed it a bit. But it was actually pretty good, had texture and taste like a bagel and not some weird MRE bread (other MRE bread products I haven't been as impressed with). I can make better bagels though, as do some bakeries, but it's a lot of work.

Sometimes the MRE bagels come on ebay but they're pretty expensive (maybe $10 with shipping) but that's still a lot less than a First Strike Ration. Watch out for flavored ones on ebay if you just want to try a plain one.

I wish they'd sell them freestanding. I want to give my sister one to try.

Footnote, Steve1989 got the bagel in a #6 FSR from 2019 and thought it tasted like a hamburger bun. He put MRE cheese on it though, which doesn't work well with bagels in my mind. I had 2 3 4 and 8 only, and in my email it labeled one of them as 2019. Here's Steve's review:

Yep, I had at least one bagel from an FSR that I remember.
If you are from an area of country like I am where we have A+ bagels, it’s turrible.
One of those Thomas’ bagels from a bag is a little more like the FSR version. I may have put cheese on mine as well. Lol

If I remember correctly, Bob was selling some bagles that were supposed to make it into government MREs in 2024-2030 if I am correct.

Cracked a 2019 #8 FSR open to snack on occasionally.
There was a bagel in it as well.
