Escalloped Patatoes with Ham
Escalloped Patatoes with Ham
Can someone provide a breakdown of the date coding thing..
I have a package of the entree and it has the following numbers printed on the box of the entree.
1153512C
It also came in the dark brown bag..
I kinda want to taste it but if this is older like say from 1991..I think I will just pass this on to the garbage can..
What say you all..???

That would indeed be from 1991. That particular entree was discontinued after 1996 I think. I tasted one back in the early 90s and there is a reasonable balance between ham and potatoes to keep it from being too salty. I wouldn't immediately consign it to the garbage if the entree package isn't bloated, you should see what some of the regulars on this site dare to eat
and many of the antiquated rations are still good! If you don't eat it, there maybe someone who wants to buy it from you
Which reminds me ... I've got some of the brown bag MREs laying around here someplace as well ...

Eat it! Eat it!
Well, that's my quick recommendation...my longer recommendation is to check the package for cracks, tears, punctures, swelling, etc. If it's ok, open it up and give it the smell test. If nothing smells off, look at it in some light and if it doesn't look back at you, try a small taste.
Like BigMark said, if it's been stored properly, it's probably still ok - I've eaten a bunch of MREs from 1992 (ate them in 2003-2004) and didn't have a problem with any of them.
Just practice safe eating.

Potatoes and Ham
Just opend up the cardboard box..
I've never seen an entree in a silver mylar type pouch..
I know that the color of the pouch is usually green..
Any one have any additional insight on this silver pouch.
I'm going to nuke it just to be sure.
I'll post in a littel while how it goes on the taste test..

Re: Potatoes and Ham
Gee, did it get packaged backwards? Be interesting to see what color the inside of the bag is. Good luck!

Potatoes and Ham
Well,
I did it guys..
I eat the Escalloped Potatoes with Ham.
I did of course nuke it for a minute and a half..
It smelled okay out of the pouch with no off taste.
It really had the Hammy taste..not bad but you could taste the salt in the ham..
It didn't really have much taste so I put a lot of Texas Pete's Hot Sauce on it and it became something eatable..
The inside of the pouch was the same as the outside..no color difference.
I took a picture of the meal and once I figure out to post it I will add it to this thread..
Overall..I'd scarf this up if I was really hungry..wasn't too bad at all..but it was really the mental aspect of eating something this old..
I've got some T-Rations that I'll have to break open soon..
I'll keep you all posted..

there is nothing wrong with eating old mres
as long as you do a taste and smell check.
you will find the mre parts fast that havent
kept up with time like cheese spread
and some times crackers and fat candy
with milk or cream.
i have eaten a lot of old stock mres from
the early 80s to today and i have never been
sick or il,there are bigger chances to get sick
from fast food and old food in the fridge at home
i will do a 1982 or 86 taste/eat soon and i post the pics for
you here.
have a great day al rations friends around the world
