I don't think lentils in general are too bad. But the lentils I've had in the HDRs haven't been very good. To me, the reason they didn't include them in the regular MREs is because no one would eat them.
I think that's the problem with the HDR - it's designed to be so culturally and religiouslly neutral that it also comes out taste and flavor neutral.

I agree with K-Man,
I've only tried a few, but basicly, there's no taste whatsoever. No spices, sugar, salt/pepper ...
Fills you up, but you're in no hurry to eat another...
Exactly what they want!

I went through a case of HDR's last year, and I'm in no hurry to do that again.
I think lentils were chosen because most the of the Third World recipients who will get these have lentils in their diet already. I like lentils usuallly, but in a meaty lamb stew or soup. The HDR lentils, like all of the entrees, have odd seasonings. Is it cinnamon, or nutmeg? Yechhh!
I did preserve one main entree: "Peas in Tomato Sauce".
I've set in on the back of the bar in my home, and it is always the source of amusement to my guests.
