Do the heater package have a best before date printed on them ? I have read 5 years.

I believe (at least on recent heaters) the production date code, in the same format as on the outer bag itself, is printed at the very bottom on the front of the heater.

Right, they have the same 4 digit date code as MREs but no best-by date. They loose "power" with age but you can "boost" them again with a dash of salt.
