I was just in the grocery store during lunch and ran across this new product:
http://www.spamsingles.com/
It's like a little entree/retort pouch with a single slice of spam (original or turkey) inside. The pouches look suspiciously like the old "Ham Slice" MRE entrees.
Great stuff for when you need some spam in an emergency but don't want to open a whole can!
FAQ from the website:
Q: I didn't know that SPAM came in single slices. What should I do now?
Remain calm. That's the most important thing. Secondly, use the power of your brain and imagine how your life will be changed. Go easy at first, because this is a delicate matter that could easily blow your mind. If you need to relax, make a sandwich. A SPAM sandwich!
Q: Is a SPAM Single the same SPAM as SPAM in the can?
Yes, and no. It is the same wonderful treat with the same tongue-splitting amazing taste as always. But also, a SPAM Single is very different. It can easily fit in a pocket. It is just enough for one person. It has more aerodynamic and perhaps shiner packaging. A SPAM Single is alone, fighting a bland world, shouting “I am but a single slice! I taste good! I am convenient! And I am PRETTY!”
Q: How do I open SPAM Singles?
There are directions right on the back. I will now recreate them using different language in an attempt to quell any and all confusion. Firmly grip the SPAM Single near the top of the package, next to the handy perforation. Your other hand should hold the SPAM Single on the other side of the notch. With all your might and perhaps a random and satisfying grunt, rip open the pouch roughly. From the bottom of the pouch, gently work the SPAM Single towards the top with a squeezing motion. Soon after, all your SPAM dreams will come true.

Maggie will be so pleased. They finally did it. Spam in a retort pack. It was only a matter of time, from the Tuna. Break out your best crackers and bread, guys. The Ladies are going to want to party tonight, with Hoo's Deauvers!!! (Actually, I think it's a good idea, Kman, better than can of Viennas for a pack of crackers.)

SPAMLETS!!! This is too cool (contrary to what my loving wife thinks). I'm going to have to look for these at the store.

I can't seem to locate any, but my little BRO said he saw some in a Big-Lots, which is some kind of Dollar General like store. Food Dog does'nt have any yet. Maggie(Margaret Thacher) was a big fan of "SPAM", and said so. Man, I can't wait to make an instant Spam Samich!

Big Lots is one nation-wide chain that seems to be carrying these.
I have a feeling that they didn't go over well in the supermarkets (when Kman first saw them in January,) so they ended up at Big Lots for liquidation. We have another store locally that is selling them (also a liquidator,) but they want 79¢ each for them, so I get them at Big Lots as well.

Just got back from a recon of the Big-Lots, which is about 40 darned klicks away, and gas is'nt getting any cheaper. Sending Kman a couple pics. .60 cents a pack for the spamlets. Also found some Zatarain's Red Beans&Rice with Sausage, ready to eat out of the pouch. Hmm, wonder who thought that one up???

Is this packed like the MRE pouch..
Do you need to add anything or is just a heat and eat thing?
This might sound like a good sub for the MRE one.
Might be fresher also..

I think that dish has been a traditional washday (Monday) meal in Louisana's Creole community for quite some time now
Be careful about heating the Zatarain pouches, they aren't made from a trilaminate material, and if I remember correctly there are no instructions for boiling the pouch; only microwave instructions.

Yes it is. Insofar as eating it, it's your preference if you want to add anything or even heat it. You could just rip the package open and eat it as is, just as you could open up a can of SPAM and eat it out of the can. All the ones that I've seen have a 2009 Best By date on them. Don't know if it is of any significance with the retort pouches, but Hormel used to say that the shelf life on SPAM was indefinite, until they were required to put a Best By date on the cans.
