MREs don't come in Mylar bags. I'm not sure what kind of plastic they are, but they are definitely not aluminized. Would that they were, btw. If so, they'd make a truly superior refelctor oven to hold a bubbling FRH.

The outer packaging of MREs in the U.S. Is 7.2 Mil MilSpec plastic with UV protectant.

Mylar can work verywellformaking your own, as long as you are using dried or sealed items. Do not use Mylar to store "wet" items. PM me if you have any questions. One of the companies we own uses Mylar for packaging dried food products. I can give you some tips and pointers.

Thanks. i am basically taking an entre and a side, crackers, dessert and adding my own stuff like a spoon, 3 honey sticks, a beverage bag, a bag of tea, coffee, creamer, 3 sugars, and another drink, some kind of drink powder, and a packet of soup / oatmeal. sort of a Super MRE. as well as Pre mixxed bread powder with baking powder / salt and a packet of yeast in it. all you gotta do is crack it open, add water, mix and put it on a stick over a fire.
So If i am doing everything right, 1 MRE could last for 2 days depending on how you eat it.
1 entree and 1 side can last me a day and a half.. then when you add the bread and honey and a drink, everything else can be for the next day or at least breakfast. and it takes up almost no space and extra weight, but it would add a lot for morale boost.

Blackdogbob, you have raised my curiosity. Can you go into that "dry items only" statement, please?
