Freeze dried meals

Post by thechip1 » Sat Feb 26, 2005 7:34 pm

Has anyone here tried the freeze dried meals from the RCW or MCW's? I notice the Epicenter has some of the freeze-dried entrees for sale, but they are $5 each! I might try a few for the heck of it. I could open up my 10 year old RCW's I recently bought, but that isn't that fresh!

I've eaten a number of the freeze-dried meals from the RCWs. Even the 10-year old entrees were perfectly good once I rehydrated them. IIRC, they're made for the military by Mountain House Foods so if you just go into a sporting goods store and picks one of their commerical packages, it'll be practically the same as the RCW entree.

I just used one on the entrees from an old RCW, which was dated 9xxx and had dark green cocoa packs, so I think it must have been 1989 not '99. Anyway the freeze-dried meal is perfectly fine; it happens to have been produced by Oregon Freeze Dry in Albany Oregon. 4 ounces + 12 ounces hot water = 16 oz = same as 2 MRE entrees, but weighs only 4 oz, great for hiking of course, but these and the oatmeals & cocoas are even great for motel travel for use with the hot-water/coffee maker.
