Looking at a Vintage MRE: 1992 Pork with Rice in BBQ Sauce

Post by ElevatorFan73 » Tue Apr 22, 2014 5:42 pm

Brought yet another Browner at a local surplus store for the what seemed low to me price of 8 bucks.

I didn't put the dates in this post, too lazy to at the moment.

MEAL, READY-TO-EAT, INDIVIDUAL
MENU NO. 1
PORK WITH RICE IN BBQ SAUCE
ACCESSORY PACKET B
SO-PACK-CO, INC.
MULLINS, SC 29574

looking at the menus, this appears to have

Pork w/Rice in BBQ Sauce TS 8oz
Applesauce TS
Jelly
Crackers
Cocoa
Bev Base
Hot Sauce
Spoon
Acc Pkt B

so here are the contents
Image
PORK WITH RICE IN BARBECUE SAUCE
Date Code: 2198
Looks in good shape, no damage
APPLESAUCE
Date Code: 2203
Looks fine, no damage
Image
CRACKERS
Date Code: 2210
Vaccum sealed goodness! Perfectly fine.
Image
GRAPE JELLY
Date Code: 287 (??)
Smallest amount of grape jelly you could give someone.
Image
COCOA BEVERAGE POWDER TYPE 1
Date Code: 2105
Much more softer than the other one I got, powder in it still feels like powder.
Image
BEVERAGE BASE POWDER
Date Code: CHERRY 2206
This has seen better days, the powder became a rock, and the bag slightly ripped in the center but did not tear open the plastic liner inside.
Image
ACCESSORY PACKET B
COFFEE, INSTANT
CREAM SUBSTITUTE
SUGAR
SALT
CHEWING GUM
TOILET TISSUE
HOT SAUCE
HAND CLEANER
Image
Everything in good shape, with two surprising unlisted Tootsie Rolls. However, the HOT SAUCE was loose in the MRE bag and the HAND CLEANER was missing :?: :?:

Oh, and theres a spoon.

So, this will go in my little collection of old MRE's im hoarding. Also, remember that yellow HDR that was at my surplus store? Sadly, that wasn't for sale. Oh well. I'd wind up eating it anyways.
There's yer lot. Has anyone else found issues with older MRE's with the packing?

That one was always a favorite of mine, could never understand why they got rid of it. If I remember right, a google search looking for a recipe for it is how I found MRE Info in the first place, as one member posted a clone recipe for it a while back.

Hi
BBQ Pork and rice are the perfect combination, and we hear about this all the time.
The good new is that very soon you'll be able to find this combination.
Stay tuned ..

ElevatorFan73, thanks a lot for the nice presentation of that vintage MRE :D 8) . The PORK WITH RICE IN BARBECUE SAUCE is an entree, which I unfortunately have never tried :( . I have a lot of those in my collection, but I´m not brave enough to taste a meat main course which is about twenty years old :( , although it could be eadible if stored the right way :? !

I'd NEVER take a chance on an old MRE meat anything! I remember when someone on here mentioned the Chicken Ala King getting people seriously sick from pinholes in the bag, even that shys me away.

I recall the Pork w/Rice in BBQ Sauce being one of my favorites, but ElevatorFan73 when you mentioned people getting sick from pinholes in the chicken ala king entree, I recall that but what made me violently-almost-pumped-out-my-stomach-ill in 1989 I believe it was, was the tiny pin-holed turkey, diced w/gray MRE of the brown pouch era (about the worse place and time to get food poisoning was on a weekend drill with my guard unit  ) I still pause at the bitter irony of never getting so much as indigestion from the MCIs we ate in 1988 that were made in 1979 and 1980.
