Am not convinced that is a WWII tin of spam - the design looks to 1950s to me.

That's actually the very first SPAM can design. If you look closely at the first picture you can see that it says "A NEW HORMEL MEAT", which they only kept on the can for the first few years. On SPAM's website you can see in the history of spam slideshow that this was the design shown on the ads that Hormel put out to advertise the fact that they were providing SPAM to the troops. The 1950's designs added a bunch more text to the can and canned the NEW slogan since it had been out for more than a decade at that point.
