Rather stupid question

Title says it, but I will ask anyway:
I notice a certain odour escaping when opening an MRE bag, is this any kind of preservative? I guess I'm asking if opening the outer MRE Bag reduces the lifespan of the contents.
Cheers

I don't think it's anything special they put in there - just leftover smells from the manufacturing process, I'd guess. All that cardboard and plastic must generate it's own flavor - kind of like the old MCIs had a distinctive smell all their own.
Hopefully it's just the cardboard and plastic smelling and not an exploded/decomposing entree.

In some cases it could be from a leaky tobasco bottle.

For bad smells,I vote the canadien IMP's.They have a "chemical" smell in the paper sack they come in and the boil in the bag entrees have the same chemical smell when opened.I guess thats one way to preserve stuff.

I haven't actually noticed a chemical smell in my IMP's... i'll have to keep that in mind the next time i crack one open!

Well,i've only had one,a breakfast,so I guess I shouldn't judge them all bad. But that one kinda turned my stomach! I've got two more left but haven't been too anxious to open them.
