Good to see you again Norge! Ah yes the original MREs with the fruit flavored styrofoam that would instantly suck the moisture from your mouth when you took a bite. I recall when my national guard unit was first issued MREs around the same time that we traded in our ODs for cammies and when we dug into the "styro-fruit" as we called it, many of us were wishing for our MCIs with the canned fruit. They were fine if you added water, but who wants to mess with that at night in the pitch dark of a wooded training site?

Re: the first mre,holy grale
I just realized that my post may have been a bit confusing where I said "they were fine if you added water." I meant the freeze-dried/dehydrated fruit, not the MCI fruit.Heck sometimes the canned fruit was the best partof the MCI depending on which one you got.

Hey hey Norge! Great to see ya back on here!
And 440 - I know what you mean but I still loved the old styrofruit About this time last year I snagged quite a few of the old fd peaches from gearsource. I've eaten a few of them since then and still think they're great.

Thanks Ruleryak! And, in all honesty, I much preferred the styro-fruit to the cherry nut cake which to this day I still cannot force myself to eat.

Hi Ken,
wow, you are back!?
Congratulations for that great ration , I´m pretty sure you are keen on the CHERRY NUT CAKE , but I´m also sure that you will never eat that ration part . Any idea when that MRE was packed (the codes that can be seen are hard to "translate" )?
In MUNA-museum Marktbergl, Germany, you can also find that MRE prototype, see here:

Store that MRE in your safe , it is precious .
