MREs Made The Local Paper

Some professors over at Texas A&M have been working on reducing the packaging size for MREs. Looks like there is currently no schedule for rolling this out.

Very interesting. BTW: what is current status of freeze dried rations in US army? Is Cold Weather ration still being produced?

There are still the Meal, Cold Weather and the Food Packet, Long Range Patrol with freeze dried components. Technically they are the same meal these days with the only difference being the packaging and the accessory packet.

Mountain House makes freeze dried group rations for the military now too - pouches that reconstitute to serve 15 to 20 people.

Interesting link, I wonder if the new pouches (bags) will look anything like the Vietnam style LRRP ration bags. At least that is the impression I get from all this. Also I was wondering if the considered how the packaging will decompose in the environment? That is a big problem whether you're in a tactical or non tactical situation; is the amount of visable trash you leave or consume.
