The black crescent on MRE boxes

Post by mw509 » Mon Mar 06, 2006 5:18 pm

I always wondered about the black crescent on the outside of MRE boxes. I finally found a website that explains why it's there

It's intended to be reminiscent of the window cutout on an outhouse door :D

Alas, all these questions and more will be answered on the March 9th episode of Mail Call: Mark V Special Ops Craft/Gunboat/German Paratroopers & Junkers/M113 APC/K-Rations: #51, 9:30am and 3:30pm EST. R. Lee Ermey tells all!

Deanopilot - so did you catch that episode of Mail Call? It sounds like one I might have seen sometime last year where they talk about K-rations and C-rations and they even bring on a collector who had an original c-ration and he opens it up (spoiler: it ain't pretty).

And btw mw509 - thanks for tracking the info down about the crescent symbol. I'll have to save that page for future reference (meaning = for when I forget again where the symbol came from). :-)

I always mistook these as food supplies intended for the Middle East "Red Crescent" (Their version of the Red Cross)... :?

Well, they are food supplies and most are destined for the Middle East, so don't feel too bad.

Sorry Kman, missed this post. I also missed the March episode. Tivo missed it too, or it wasn't as advertised. I did see it many "moons" ago, and seem to recall that the crescent symbol went all the way back to Napoleon and frency food-croissants...FWIW.
