LEMON CAKE Can

Hi guys,

with my last eBay trade the seller gave some bonus :D , amongst others a can of LEMON CAKE :D .

Here some photos:

On the upper lid the following information is printed:

FOR SAFETY COVER CAN WITH CLOTH WHEN OPENING
NEVER LET THE SAUCEPAN BOIL DRY.

TO MICROWAVE, REMOVE FROM CAN AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS
OPEN THIS END FIRST

SRF 300G 4336 14:25
LEMON CAKE

4336 maybe is the date code and stand for December 2004
The abbreviation SRF could stand for STERLING FOODS. It seems that further instructions are inside the can.

Any idea which nation and ration that can belongs, or is it civilian? US, British? Is the word “can” a clue that the can is US?

If that were US issue I would think it would be from a UGR, the only Lemon cake I am familiar with is the Italian Lemon Cake and it is a frozen tray. It has to be stored frozen until thawed and ready to be eaten. That might possibly be from a 10 man British ration?

i have nt seen one of these before, but my money is on a british 10 man orp. lemon sponge cake with lemon sauce are common in british ration packs

Hi Hagen!

I am inclined to believe this is not British. The reason being that every group ration tin issued in British rations has a gold lacquer tone to the metal like the early World War Two ration tins. Also, when they print the contents of the tin on the lid they always (until recently?) printed the contents in large black letters around the rim of the lid.

This tin may have had a paper label. Are there any indications of glue spots on the sides where a label was removed?

I wonder if it could be Canadian? Does their group ration follow British issue?

Otherwise this could be U.S. issue and only a short contract run. Maybe a test batch?

Good question, however the absence of French text tends to rule against it.

Even if it is considerably older than 7 years, Canada's bilingual laws have been around for decades.

The first time I saw a bilingual label in the US, my brain had a mini core dump, trying to decipher French, when it was Spanish.
