How often do you eat MRE's????

Post by Sr. Wing Commander » Thu Feb 16, 2006 10:58 am

How often do you guys eat MRE's. I find the technology and idea of them fascinating, but have never particularly liked them. Now realize that the majortiy of the MRE's I have eaten were either when I was a cadet in the Civil Air Patrol, and then in college in ROTC (our ROTC unit trained with the National Guard so we were in the field more often then most). But this was the mid to late 80's and early 90's. We didn't have heaters and I don't recal tobascco. Most of the main menu's were down right nasty (although hot they likely would have been much better). I have eaten 1 or 2 of the newer ones (which seem better) and keep some on hand for storms and such. But some of you seem to eat them all the time. So I was just curious how often you eat them.

Not to mention if you aren't training that is a heck of a lot of fat, carbs, and calories :!: .

I dont know how to vote ?

Iam a collector, but sometimes i eat them. There are many reasons to eat them.

When i get a new one for my collection, i try every time to get two. So i try one.

When i visit an military car meeting with my original Bundeswehr Bug.

Or sometimes i only feel like to do it :D

I use my MRE/IMP/RATPACKS mostly in the summer. I like to fly to remote wilderness areas in my small aeroplanes, and the compact package makes them perfect for the purpose (for me anyway :D )...

The rest of the year I spend locating, buying, and of course testing them.....

I don't usually chow down on them except when the wife goes to visit her family.. she doesn't really like them, except when I trick her into eating them.. said the chilimac was from a can, and she loved it, go figure. I mostly use them for camping/hunting..

Don't tell me you fly too, Jack! You'd be right at home here in the Elk Valley then. I don't have my license yet but my dad and i fly around here fairly often in his 172XP. I've given him a few MRE's for his survival kit, but he hasn't worked up the guts to try them yet

What's that plane in the first pic, bushmaster?

Yeah, I first soloed a 172 in 1959 at CYQB (Quebec City), age 18....

I've been flying Ultralight Aircraft since 1988.

The top plane is a single-place Sylvaire Bushmaster, kitted in Sylvan Lake Alberta. This example was built in 1985. I bought it as parts in 1994, rebuilt what had to be rebuilt including the engine. I have been flying it for the last 11 years....

Great for landing on river sandbars for a little fishing and/or camping/hunting....I can lift it off in less than 100' and land and stop in the same distance. stall 38 Mph, cruise 75 Mph, burn 3.5 Gallons US per Hour (car gas) at cruise.

Plane in lower picture I built from a wreck, making so many changes that Transport Canada declared me the manufacturer, so it's a prototype I guess...That's me greasing one on at CSK8 (King George Airpark in Surrey BC), last September.

Still trying to interest CASARA in utilizing my skills/planes, and those of my friends and fellow pilots....

I carry a couple IMP's or a british 24 Hr. ratpack as part of the normal equipment aboard.....Ya just never know Eh!

I've only seen one bushmaster - a few guys from the calgary flying club stopped in our airport for a look around - they loved it! we've had several visitors from calgary since. There was a good assortment - Bushmaster, Murphy Rebels, RV-7, i think a cub and super cub too. If you're ever flying in southeastern BC you'll have to stop by!

Myself, my dad, and a few other guys are going to look at restoring an old strip in the backcountry this summer - it's in some of the nicest country in this part of BC but it's several hours driving, less than an hour flying - but it's vast and unpopulated so if you go down you better have a decent kit!

3.5 gallons an hour? ha, that's gotta be nice! the Hawk XP burns 14 gallons an hour i think? and that's 100LL! Then again we go a bit faster too...

It's been the opposite with the CASARA thing for me - i'm trying to get the local pilots interested in doing it! Being on the local SAR team i know we'd use them quite a bit with the extensive backcountry around here but for some reason they just aren't biting. Apparently CASARA is kinda political - i personally think politics have no place in SAR.

I've never actually been to oshkosh, i know a couple pilots from here do go and i'd definitely like to check it out some year...

Hey, look at us go off topic like that! It's funny how one topic spawns a whole different tangent... If anyone wants me to stop just gimme a good boot! :P
