Hi Rudi. You can find the official information about that ration here:
http://www.dscp.dla.mil/subs/rations/pr ... gpiabt.htm
Here's the description of it:
The Food Packet, Survival, General Purpose, Improved is used by the Services to sustain an individual in survival situations, including escape and evasion, under all environmental conditions, and when potable water is limited. Requested by the Air Force, it is used to sustain personnel in any survival situation for periods of less than 5 consecutive days.
I've eaten some of the bars from a survival ration before and they're very good. I haven't tried the wintergreen candy so I can't describe it to you. But I get the impression it's just a hard type of candy.

It's a mint flavored bar of compressed sugar. I don't want to say confectioners suger, but thats what it is. Now thats something for a real survival situation. The other bars(Corn flake, granola, shortbread and chocolate desert(MY FAVORITE) are edible and very tasty. The only problem is finding them. They are more rare than current issue LRRP rats.

I bought two in a recent eBay auction. Final price: $5.01 apiece!

Notice the 2001 packing date!
The same seller is currently selling a 1988 version packed in an aluminum "Spam-type" can with a pop-top:
Check it out at:

It's a Dutch Auction with 15 available. Bid at $5

Nothing says "Good eating" like a spam-shaped can!

I've eaten the one out of the can before. I think it was about 10 years old or so at the time. Wasn't bad. You drink about half a canteen with one of the bars and they swell up inside you, makes you feel full for several hours.
They were packaged in OKC, I wonder if I could get my hands on some.
