I am not suprised to see natick looking at freeze dried/dehydrated
foods as a replacement for pouched entree/side items
they are lighter, smaller and taste better

the weight issue works out about the same(lighter but carry a bit more water)..I guess thats why they are trying them on mech soldiers first

But As For Being smaller and more important better tasting??
IMHO..Its well worth the effort!
My only question is what took them so long :)

I worked the hot water problem for them

I was reading that article a few days ago, too. So it sounds like they just put together a ration with freeze-dried entrees, powerbars, etc. I'm sitll not sold on the freeze-dried entree part. Sure, it probably tastes better and keeps longer, but for crying out loud...you have to put hot water in there. And that just adds an extra step to the process. Sure, if you were based off a Stryker, they might add a hot water tap, but how the other hundreds of thousands of soldiers in the Armed Forces? What are they supposed to do?

Hi Kman
i do aggree with you that this would not work accross the entire
mre menu for the foot soldier

i wonder if they are working on a new menu for just mech units
or if they plan on a small integration here and there
its hard to tell by just reading the page

the mcw/lrp use dryed food,so i have to wonder where they are heading with this

Maybe next year we will see "mme" .. Meals Mech :)

I found this interesting as well

It Appears the Mcw/lrp are going to include mre items

Watched a Modern Marvels the other day,all about Main Battle Tanks. The British challenger has a built in ration heater/hot water dispenser for tea.Just an engine heated tank with a tap on the front. It would be easy to install in any mechanized outfit. And I think anymore, all units are mechanized to some extent. :!:

Who needs fancy built-in hot water heaters when you can just use an ammo lid on the back of a tank:

Yes,but I can think of many reasons why someone might stay inside.
NBC,(MOPP for you Army types),flying metal,etc
Plus,no JP-8 fumes in your coffee! I mean,MRE'S are usually bad enough and JP-8 does NOT improve the flavor!! :x

That would be a bad joke, put "live main lobster" printed on an mre pouch.
I want that one for a mre t-shirt design.

That's a great idea, OT! I'll try to get that one whipped up today.
