Hi, i just wanted to eat one of my MRE´s and decidet to open a tuna one...
So i opend the MRE-box from Sopakco with inspectiondate 2011 and get my tuna out of it.
I opend the bag and found some intresting stuff in it:
1. a heater... ok thats strange in a tuna MRE
2. the Starkist tuna... ok thats right
3. hot beverage bag... ok there is the heater for...
4. 2 packs of wheat snack bread... ok but where is my tortilla???
5. Macaroni and cheese, mexican style... or this is for the heater...
6. nacho cheese prezels... ok thise have to be inside...
7. spoon... normal...
8. assesory bag with iced tea inside... ok, but what the hell is the hot beverage bag for, there is no coffee???
9. cheese spread with bakon...
10. bbq sauce... what the hell do i need this for???
11. beverage base raspberry... maybe for the hot beverage bag? no way!
ok i think this will be a very strange kind of dinner... macaroni and cheese maybe with the bbq sauce, one wheat snack for the cheese and one for tuna... no the tuna is too dry... wheat snack bread with tuna and cheese... or with bbq sauce... no way...
or the tuna in the macarony with bbq sauce heated up and then put it between the two breads with cheese on top...
ok thats all i think i will open a nother bag... maybe sloppy joes...
greetz pyro
p.s. you can tell me in which way you will eat this MRE... and i think about it and choose the best proposal

No mayo with it either?!
To me they mixed it up with #8:
Tuna instead of a Beef Patty
Mexican Macaroni & Cheese
Nacho Cheese Pretzels
Cheese Spread w/Bacon
2 Wheat Snack Bread
Jalapeno Ketchup
Beverage Base, CHO Fortified
Hot Sauce
Accessory Packet B
Spoon
Flameless Heater
Hot Beverage Bag

no mayo...
maybe they mixed it up with no. 8, but there is no hot sauce and no jalapeno ketchup in it... only bbq sauce...
but then it would much more plausible if it would be an no. 8 bag, but it was a tuna bag and i tink the tuna was the only right thing in this bag (and maybe the prezels) the assesory bag is wrong also in a tuna bag...

Take a look at the packaging date stamp on the MRE. I'd be inclined to guess that it is an early production one from 2008 and is actually a carryover from 2007 with the Tuna being a substitution for the beef patty. Your description of the contents is for a 2007 production Menu 8 (with the exception of the Tuna package.) In 2007, Tuna was Menu 10, rather than 21.
Regarding the FRH; there is an FRH in every MRE menu item, including #21 from the 2008 production, even though there is nothing in Menu item 21 that would appear to benefit from heating.
As for an explanation, it was probably just a packaging error or a substitution due to a lack of beef patty packages. Generally the people that they hire to work on those packaging lines are relatively low paid workers and often aren't proverbially, "the sharpest tools in the shed."
How do you eat it? Be like an American soldier and be resourceful

. I'd suggest going to the refrigerator and getting some Mayo for the tuna, add your favorite condiments to it, and enjoy it with the two WSBs that were in the package. Use the FRH to heat up the Mac and Cheese, add the Cheese spread to it for a little extra cheese, and if you'd like, add the BBQ Sauce to it as well. You can mix the beverage base in a cup or glass (or in a canteen cup if you'd like to duplicate the field experience.)
Personally, if the mayo weren't available, I'd probably heat up the Mac & cheese and add the tuna to it along with the cheese package. Maybe crumble up one of the WSBs to add to the mix.

that sounds strange but i will try it that way tomorrow... todays dinner was the sloppy joes *hmm yummy*
there is no date on the bag itself, but all items had an productiondate from 2009

... that seems to become much more wierd...
and the thing with the heaters... i got a couple of tuna MRE´s but there was NOONE with a heater...

They must be relatively fresh then. They finally took the FRH out of the current run of Menu 21s.

I think you guys are being too generous by calling that fat-free crap "mayonnaise".
I'll never understand why Natick is happy to load each MRE up with every manner of chips, crackers, candy and assorted junk foods, and yet they are too timid to include 2 tablespoons of real mayo in the tuna entree.

Real mayo is made from raw eggs and lots of oil. I guess they doesn´t want to poision their troops with spoiled (from the heat) mayo?

I don't know. Unopened jars and foil packets of mayo are fine without refigeration.
