MRE Nutritional breakdown?

Post by Dingleberry Johnston » Tue Jan 26, 2010 7:33 pm

I know there's got to be a percentage "formula" somewhere...anybody know what it is, off-hand? The military doesn't just slap a bunch of stuff in a bag and call it a meal. I know there's a "science" behind it, and nutritional professionals running the show and making the calls.

I'm specifically talking about the dietary ratios of protein to fat to carbohydrates. I've heard it's something like 30% protein -to- 10% fat -to- 60% carbohydrates, but I'm not sure if that's really true. (Of course, these percentages may vary slightly from meal-to-meal.)

Can anyone point me towards a source for this information? I've checked the U.S. Army Natick Center's website but can't find anything conclusive. I also looked around the MREInfo pages, but couldn't find anything. Did I overlook it? I don't know where else to look.

:?: :?: :?:

Just curious. I'm trying to assemble my own version of DIY " MRE's " from instant and freeze-dried foods for backpacking trips, but would like to get the ratios similar since the physical exersion from backpacking is probably close to what a typical soldiers' daily requirements would be.
