MRE #21. Question: Besides eating it all, yea, I know, it's food. I got it. But what? A packet of Star Kist Albacore, Tortillas(not real corn tortillas, like the Mexicans eat), and a packet of Mayo. And pretzels. What is this? The one meal that Tom Hanks wished for, in the movie, Castaway?

Dirty Dave -
I have read your post more than once now and am still unable to decipher the actual question being asked.
Admittedly, I have never seen a Tom Hanks movie, with the sole exception of The DaVinci Code, and in that case, only because my unbridled adoration of Audrey Tatau. My question is; If I did suffer through Castaway would I then understand the nature of your question? I know some people who make constant references to dialog from Bill and Ted's Big Adventure, they seem to get a bizarre feeling of satisfaction by making "insider" references. Is this one of those things?
MREs are often inspired by comfort foods, and for a great number of people a tuna salad sandwich is indeed comfort food. Why do we have to drag Tom Hanks into this? What has he ever done to you, besides Sleepless In Seattle?

Exactly, Bypah. Tuna on a tortilla with mayo is not "tuna salad", unless you pour the dairy shake on it. By the way, since mayo requires no refrigeration until opened, how about some real Mayo, like Hellmans or C.F. Sauers, instead of that cheap crap fat-free Kraft garbage?

I also wonder why the use the fat-free stuff. The last I heard they were having problems getting our soldiers to eat enough calories.
I should hasten to add, that I don't consider the Tuna MRE to be comfort food, I just picture the intent as being to provide a comfort food.
The devil is in the details. By the time you lose the bread and the pickle relish the sense of familiarity is gone.

I guess fat may spoil to fast in the heat? Most of MRE´s items are low-fat.

The problem is called
ration stripping. They strip the MRE´s down to ~ 2.500 calories. That´s why they intend the FSR, a 24 hrs ration with 2.900 calories by recommanded 3.600 calories.

Given the nature of Military food, of any kind, we always ran to the 'Roach-Coach' when it appeared.
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, Roach Coach was used to describe the truck with sandwiches and snacks .
Dubious quality yet better than GI chow !
