I spent December 9th thru 13th on the Ozark Highland Trail backpacking. Took a mixture of mres that I saved to test on the trail. Was suprised to find the the veggie burger, pork rib and omlete were great. I allowed my self two (2) mres a day for Breakfast, lunch and dinner. This was plenty to keep me going. Temps were is the low 20's at night to upper 30's/40' during the day. Also tested some of the ECWS. The ECWS parka and pants worked well also the ECWS sleeping bag system. Very heavy but worth the weight. BTW 4 days of mres is tough on my system. Cheers everyone and Merry Christmas.

Thanks for the update, OT - sound like a good time. So do you field strip your MREs before taking them out? Even then, it sounds like a lot of trash. Do you ever find that a problem or do you just pack it away and it's not an issue?

Most of the time I will break the MRE down into what I want to carry. This time I needed everything in the bag. I am ready to get back in the woods.
As far as trash. We usually have a fire. We carefully discard our trash in the fire. Other stuff we will pack out.

Got any pics OT? Also, do the MRE bags burn well? I just have visions of a really rank smell and dark chemical smoke emmitting from the fire.

Dave, I am known for taking a camera everywhere. To save weight and being lazy, I did not take a camera. I could have kicked myself because of the snow in the mountains.
The brown bags do not burn well and I was amazed how long they lasted near or on the flame. I guess thats a good thing. The foil pouches almost erupt when on direct flame. The FHP are very cool in the fire even wet. The magnesium gives a great sparkler show.
I accidently threw a tobasco bottle in the fire. It blew up and the cap hit me on the arm. The top of the tobasco bottle was on fire when it hit me.

Dave I still have the t-shirt where the tobasco bottle top hit me. I had an REI grey t-shirt on. There is a melted plastic stain (hard) that wont come off. I still get tickled when I look at it. It was not funny at the time. The other two guys thought it was a hoot.
I should take more photo in the field eating mres. Our main deal is taking the main entree and proping it up with a stick near the fire. In cold weather, it warms up the mre pouch and I usually save the FHP. Some FHP's crap out and you need two to do the job.
Cheers
