I see LOTS of auctions for ONE case going for 75-100 bucks a case, PLUS shipping.
Apparently those news stories only caused more demand for MREs.
Darn....
I had hoped to pick up another case or two to complete my emergency preparations. oh well.. not at those prices!

Yeah, no joke about those prices. I saw a case go for around $70 + $30 shipping yesterday. One little case...
Even worse, there's a new auction this morning for a case of MREs from 1998. It's only been up a few hours and it's already up to $40.
Dang...it's starting to look like it's going to take a few more months for prices to settled back down.

With prices that high, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ebay ban the sale of MRE's (military issue) in the near future. Usually prices peak when a ban is about to be put in place.
Been checking out the latest MRE auctions, and seeing alot of comments in the ask the seller areas of the legality of their sale. Being a public company, wouldn't look good for the stock price to be labeled as a venue for black market sales.

I'm not sure about Ebay banning the sell of MREs. I don't quite understand why the prices would be peaking just before a ban is put into place. I mean, sure, if Ebay announced they were going to start banning MRE sales next month, there'd be a rush of people buying and selling. But in this case, I don't think Ebay has announced any such thing.
I think we're just in a situation where we had a couple of bad hurricane hits and then couple that with the "bird flu" scare/threat and people are starting to look at stocking up.
I've seen a few auctions, too, where the seller is obviously reacting to people accusing them of selling "stolen" MREs or hurricane-relief MREs. I just think it's too difficult to make the case that all MRE sales are illegal because the MREs are stolen. That's just not the case. I could make the same argument for people selling surplus wool Army blankets. How do I know those aren't stolen? Is Ebay becoming a haven for stolen Army blankets?
Heck, it's bad enough that Ebay already bans the sell of perfectly legitimate items like guns and gun parts (because they want to appear to be PC)...but to start banning military food...that'd be low.

But panic causes these things.. it is sort of like the gas prices. Panic gone, gas prices down.
In this case it was free advertising (people who didn't know you could get MREs on ebay) plus people who did being worried the feds will cut off the supply soon, methinks.
Good points. I guess I was just thinking that as soon as the hurricanes got off the evening news, the buying panic would settle down. But it just seems to be getting worse. I think I'll have to update the "Buying MREs" page pretty soon.

This weekend we added 6 big jars of spghetti sauce and 6 big jars of peanut butter to our stocks, along with some tomato paste, a dozen cans of chicken broth and a bunch of crackers to our supplies.. I think we might have a month now.. if we don't lose power, we have 3 freezers of food so we have about 2 months then.
