we made the ultimate taste test on an ´83 MRE case, expected them not to be good anymore,
but really a whole lot of the items were still in best condition. just like fresh MRE.....

This is what was still delicious::::

Freeze Dried Fruits - Strawberries, Peaches, Fruit Mix
Freeze Dried Meat - Beef + Pork Patties (best entree)
Chocolate Cookies, Caramels, Bubble Gum
Crackers and Jelly
peanut butter and cheese contens became fluid with some harder stuff in it, had to knead the packages for a while
to make it creamy again...... but did not taste different at all.....

nearly all of the pound cakes
just the pineapple cake was not that good anymore,
pineapple pieces became to a kind of dark slime that smelled bad....

Image

Coffee, Creamer, Sugar,.....
just the cocoa beverage powder changed into something different, like some kind of chocolate,
but after mixing it up with water and shake well, it became the same cocoa drink like we all love....

Those things were bad and not good anymore::::

Appelsauce dark brown bitter taste....
Potato Pattie FD smelled and tasted like old fat...
Fudge Bar dry and sandy, bad taste, had to spit out....

...and with the meals, i just did a taste on the beans with tomato sauce and the meatballs,
it tasted just like any MRE and and so i eat it all up.....

...but later, for some reason i decided not to eat any other of the meals,
maybe a genetically message tellin me to stop.......

Here´s also a nice picture tour to see , of opening the case....

Damn man, you gotta have a stainless steel stomach lining lol! i wouldn't go near that cheese... or pretty well the rest of it lol... i might consider some of the freeze dried stuff, but that's still a stretch... If some madness does posess you to try any more, do let us know how it turns out! And we'll all wish you a speedy recovery

I just don't know if i could drink a beverage base that came out looking like freeze-dried deer droppings lol...

No, no relation lol... altho me and Jager have had some good times in the past  some consider that stuff an acquired taste, though the same may be said for MRE's i suppose!

Yeah, i liked that line - the rest of the team went nuts when i told 'em that one! Which reminds me, i'd better check ebay - watchin a couple bumper stickers that say that!

I think i may be in danger of becoming a "SARjunkie" heh http://www.dbs-sar.com/SARJunkie.htm

one of my favorite signs being:
"Can't understand why your spouse doesn't see the same redeeming values in an MRE that you do."

Hey, are there any other SAR members on the forum?

well, basicly it wasn´t about gettin hard on eatin some damn old stuff, just that there was the question what will happen to the stuff that is made for several years of shelf life, and after that point will it all turn bad until tomorrow???

and some stuff was definetly still in good condition.... otherwise we wouldn´t have eaten it...

or maybe it´s just that here in good old germany are some BRAVE MEN left with celtic blood in their veins...... to do stuff like this....

Peace everybody...
