Is it possible to locally buy MRE's to avoid shipping charges? Also is it any bit a good idea to buy them from people you know in the military first hand?

Reaper,

It depends on where you live. Do you live in the US or overseas? If you live in the US are there any military bases near by? How about Army-Navy surplus stores? If so that would be your first stop, or maybe in check in the yellow pages to see what else is out there. Buying locally does save on shipping but you might have to pay some higher prices for them.

As for maybe knowing somebody in the military, well..that's a possibility as well. You'll probably have to do some wheeling and dealing to get a few or a case. It depends. Also if you check out the forums here somtimes you can get ahold of somebody and make a deal.

Treesuit pretty much covered it. But I'd add that if you click the "Profile" link above, you can add your city/state/country to the "Location" field and that'll help us give you more localized advice.

Sorry I forgot to post my location. I'm in South Florida and their are a few military bases. If those are a valid place to get them without any risk im curious. I had some mre's a few years ago when they were handing them out I got about 4 boxes even though I didn't need them.

Reaper,

Okay, then you might be in luck. FL has a few Air Force Bases you can check there and see what Army Navy stores are in the area. I remember in the Orlando area there were a few surplus stores but I don't remember seeing any MRE's for sale. Also I'm not sure on Army installations in FL but you can check around on that.

Sounds like when FL gets hit with hurricanes they pass out free MRE's like were seeing in the aftermath of IKE. Any chance of getting some knowledge on Distribution points? That might be a good thing to know.

You might want to consider the MREStar civilian MREs.

The company is located in Hollywood, Florida; www.mrestar.com

Your map is pointing to Hallandale, FL a bit further south. I got the same thing until I removed the "bay 4" It's strange how Google Maps will screw up like that!

Go straight north, on your map, until you hit Hollywood Blvd, then 2 1/2 blocks more and you're there.

I'll check out the mrestar. Word of advice is don't try military surplus. I called a few and asked how much they had cases or single for and for a case they were asking 100$. Their's a few other surplus stores I still need to call but I would guess they overcharge. Still waiting for them to call me back on that. I'll see if the few people I know in the military are able to get cases. The only downside to mrestar is I don't like everything in the case but if I pick and choose it comes out for me only 40 dollars.

I think that address for MREStar is just their business office. I think their production facility is in Greenville, SC...only a couple of hours away from me.
