HDRs

Post by DIRTYDAVE » Mon Sep 19, 2005 4:32 am

Hmmm, I wonder why the military did not drop HDRs instead of MREs over in New Orleans and surrounding areas. Are they being predjudice and only using them for foreign countries? It says in the HDR section here that they are for emergency purposes. Any thoughts?

Some quick thoughts:

1. Americans think they suck - bland, unfamiliar dishes, etc.
2. Limited supply of HDRs vs. ginormous supply of MREs
3. Easier to tool up MRE production than HDR production
4. Who the heck wants "Lentil Stew" when you can have "Chili Macaroni"?

There is nothing that can make me vomit more than lentil soup or actually the thought of eating lentil soup. You are right, give it to the scumbags overseas.

I thought the same, but kman's points are basically it. One cool thing would be that HDRs are supposed to have 'wings' that let them float down if dropped from a plane. That of course would not be so great because a lot of them would go to waste if they didn't land within reach of hurricane victims, or people would go and hoard them so people would end up starving.

I'm not sure about the "wings" thing on HDRs. I have a case of the older yellow HDRs and they use almost exactly the same packaging as MREs.

Interesting idea...do any of you parachute/skydive? If it were possible, it'd be cool to drop an MRE at some point in your jump - probably after your canopy opens so you'll have a general idea where it might land - and see how it holds up after falling to the ground.

kman, don't you know that there is no reason to jump out of a perfectly good airplane? That defies common sense.

As a member of the esteemed MRE Info club, I must confess to having significant experience in aviation (hence the moniker "pilot"). And, yes, I am also a member of the triad of death (Flying, Skydiving, Scuba) with an oak leaf cluster (firearms afficionado).

From my limited skydiving experiences, I can tell you that I NEVER seen or jumped out of a perfectly good airplane. If you ever ride in a jump a/c may I suggest wearing some silk even if you don't intend on a pre-landing exit? Ever seen the movie Fandango?

Come to think of it, none of the airlines I flew for had perfectly good airplanes either.

Hey guys,
Just so everyone knows I'm AIRBORNE qualified and there is a nothing that comes close to floating to earth from under a nylon chute after exiting a perfectly good airplane. The feeling is like nothing you will ever experience. Actually it's quite calm and peaceful.
Now about these HDR's. I first got wind of the things back in 1993 when we got some experimental meals to hand to the Somalis. First we all laughed, then we had to dodge all the meals being thrown back at us by the locals. SInce we didn't print them in Somali or Islamic they couldn't read the ingredients and thought we were feeding them pork, but most welcomed the food after starving and didn't care one way or another. I'd like to meet the government fool who thought those first meals up. I'd like to strangle that guy.

LOL! Strangle away! I will film it for view on the site here.

Skydiving does look sort of fun, but I just cannot help thinking that my chute will not open. It is sort of like a bad omen so therefore I don't dare do it unless my life depends on it and the last time I checked my life did not depend on jumping out of an airplane...LOL! I am scared to death of heights, so that does not help matters either. I will fly in a plane and that, but you would have to kick me in the ass real hard to get me up and out of one with a chute.

No sorry, deanopilot, homey don't ride no Harley. Actually, I thought people who had Harleys never got a chance to ride them because they were always broken done and needed fixin'....
