Food Packet Survival-General Purpose rations...RARE!

Post by Bypah » Mon Jun 30, 2008 4:39 pm

Hi Everyone
I just got some interesting items.Survival rations in tin cans. These were made for pilots since 1961 until 1993 were they were redesigned and the tin cans(they are made of aluminum... ) phased out due to procurement problems with the tin cans and some of the items inside. So they made them in limited quantities.

I opened one of the cans ,the most dented and it had a perfect vaccum seal :o and it contents looked lik if they were packed yesterday!!!

I went for the test...I ate one of the granola bars. They came in a plastic sealed bag, not like the new ones that are vaccumed sealed It tasted and smelled ok.I washed down with water and man, those suckers bulk you up!!! :D lol

The rest of the packets were in perfect condition for an 18yr old,the soup /gravy base and the coffee were excellent and the sugar ,well like sugar...lol
Too bad they were pahsed out...
I saved the rest for my collection and kept one to add up to my survival gear.... :D
Now I need to get my hands on one of the new ones  and do more testing

Good pic. The cans are aluminum later versions from seat survival kits.

Yes they are aluminum cans, I called them "tin cans" but not in reference of the metal.

You can see photos of an MRE packing facility not far from where I live and in my old neighborhood where I grew up. And ironically I played little league baseball across the street.

The packages of coffee type I and the soup/gravy base are similar in size and color as the ones in this pic.But the material is like the one in the lower left, more like paper, no plastic coating...

The "coffee Type I" is the older, powdered stuff, right? It's a very fine powder, not the freeze-dried granules in current instant coffee .

I think this stuff was much better than the granulated kind. Better flavor and it seems to hold up to age better.

Yes, is the fine powder coffee not the granules/crystals. It taste better like real coffee. Is similar to the old Nescafe (pre crystals)... and for being an 18 yr old ration it came out ok ,as I said earlier like it was packed yesterday!!!!

Right now I'm having it with 2 out of the 3 packs of sugar and taste GREAT!!! :D
