Recently I got some 1980's mre items and well I tried some of them.
Items were:
-chicken and ham loaf -fruit and pineapple nut cakes
- a ham loaf
- chicken a la king
-dried beef patties (2x)
-crackers and pb
-cocoa and dried fruit mix
-dried peaches

I remember some of those "first generation " mre's when I was a kid. I used to receive them from an aunt that was in the army, those were her b-day gifts to me...at the time It was a novelty and I loved them!!! :D well I still love my MRE's!!

Now for the tryouts....All of the entrees were in their boxes,no dents and the packages had no ruptures. When I opened them It surprised me that after 25+ years they still had the vaccum!!! altohug the contents didn't look nice at all  The ham loaves they were darker and the chicken a la king a big "goo"....at least my doggie loved it!! ...lol
The fruit cakes looked dark, all of the fruit gone. They also had a good vaccum, a nice metallic smell ..but....I wasn't going for them
The peanut butter was all but a goner too. :(

BUT.....the FD held their ground, The fruit mix was still good after25+yrs! It had a good vacuum seal and it tasted like it was packed yesterday!!!! I ate it dried and it was good. The peaches were a black dried thing...not good!

Also the beef patties tasted ok,a lil' stale but edible.I ate them dried too. The crackers??? they were not so good, they didn't had the vaccum seal and whn I opened them, hthey were crunchy...at least my doggie loved them....lol
Finally the cocoa...after 25+years it tasted ok,nice and frothy....:-)

Would i do this again??NOOOOO  !!!!
I like to just rememder those days when as a kid enjoyed my aunt's MRE b-day gifts.NOW?? I just buy them and enjoy them fresh....:-)

Ahhh...sorry for the pics , I got none :-(...but take my word for it TRUST ME! 8)

Perhaps you can arrange to have a cat around for your next test.

While some may disagree, I feel that feeding your MRE to a cat provides for a truly definitive test.

No pictures?!! Oh, the humanity! :-) Would have loved to see some pics of that Ham Loaf. Might have made good material for an "MRE Halloween of Horrors" front page for the website.

PICS, or it DIDN'T happen!!

Glad to see others willing to temp fate by testing old rations. Only encourages me to keep trying older ones as well.
