pangea world bakers

Post by bishopmarine » Fri May 16, 2008 2:53 pm

i recently had an mre packed in 2005. it was the beef patty that has mexican mac and cheese in it. while i really like the meal. the bread that was in it was square shaped instead of the loaf looking shape that is used now. that was the first time i have seen it like that. it was made by pangea world bakers. also it was very hard and crumbly. is that normal?

Haven't heard of that, either. Did you happen to get a picture of it?

I have had some square breads, and the loaf shaped ones, but I haven't noticed any pattern to it based on years or suppliers. It's also good to hear someone else say they are more crumbly, I thought it was just me being fussy.

Here is a pic of a square one, sorry about the flash glare, but the shape and "Pangea World Bakers" is still viewable.
The date stamp is 4347, so made December 2004.

Yes. With the loaf shaped ones, you can break off a piece and you just get that piece. With the square ones it crumbles away. I like to break off bits from the snack breads and then dip them into an entree to scoop some out, that doesn't work so well with the square ones.

Yeah, I have some of that stuff, but it came from sources other than from within MREs. It's made by a local bakery called Caravan Trading in Union City CA. They used to be a military contractor for some MRE components including the Wheat Snack Bread, though I don't know if they are still a contractor. They also use some of the same MRE components in their emergency food packs that they make for the retail market. I've only seen those for sale from the local Red Cross Chapters recently. They used to be in Costco in 2-packs, but Costco stopped carrying them early last year.
