maybe because the m&ms out the the mre are in one or two (nearly) airtight bags...

Because they want us to eat them up
faster, thereby creating
more sales.
Those sly devils....

And there
ARE tan ones! If you didn't eat all of those, I bet someone would pay a bunch of money for those on eBay. Every time I find a doubled Cheez-it or huge cornflake I am tempted. People have paid thousands of dollars for outsized Chee-tos, potato chips, and so on. Perfect tan M&Ms would be gold!
And the reasons those kept well also include the shell itself. It would keep the cocoa butter from leaching out of the chocolate, preventing the off-taste of chocolate with that whitish "bloom." They were picked for their stability, but I am a little surprised that 13 year old ones are still ok. If someone offered me a 1977 bag of M&Ms when I was 13, I would have turned it down.

Blue m&m's were only added later on in 1995. They had a contest in 1995 to choose the next color, and blue was the winner

I had some Crispy M&M's from a 2004 MRE and they didn't taste that good. They looked fine and were edible, but tasted a bit off.
