In that same ACR update I mentioned in another thread, I also saw this notice about the Jalapeno Ketchup being discontinued completely because of spoilage concerns:
For DSCP Website Posting

AMSRD-NSC-CF-F (Norton/5356)
1 November 2007

TO: DSCP-FTRAA (Malason/7772)

SUBJECT: ES08-008; Deletion of Jalapeno Ketchup from MRE 27; ACR-M-027 and MRE 28, ACR-M-028

Date received: 31 Oct 07
Date due: 7 Nov 07
Date replied: 1 Nov 07

1. At the MRE Workshop, it was observed that one lot of Jalapeno Ketchup, produced by Boca Grande Foods, exhibited swollen packages. Microbiological testing revealed a high yeast count, which may accelerate spoilage.

2. Based on these results, a decision to delete Jalapeno Ketchup from the MRE 27 and MRE 28 menus was reached. In MRE 27, there will be no replacement item. In MRE 28, Menu 18 will now have a Barbecue Sauce.

3. ACR-M-027, Table I, delete:

“Ketchup, Flavored, Jalapeno, Medium
A-A-20346, Flavor V, Style B, Packaging Type 5”

Table II, Menu 5, delete: “Jalapeno ketchup”

4. ACR-M-028, Table I, delete:

“Ketchup, Flavored, Jalapeno, Medium
A-A-20346, Flavor V, Style B, Packaging Type 5”

Table II, Menu 18:
Delete: “Jalapeno ketchup” and sub “Barbecue sauce”.

5. These changes have been incorporated into the Meal, Ready-to-Eat (MRE), Assembly Requirements documents and Change 05, dated 1 Nov 07, for ACR-M-027, and Change 03, dated 1 Nov 07, for ACR-M-028, are attached.
So watch out for that Jalapeno Ketchup if you have any from the 2007 MREs!

I just had some of that last week in a 2006 chicken breast meal. No swelling of the pouch.

There was nothing wrong with it except that they put jalapeno flavoring in it for God knows why. I would much prefer plain ketchup, but Natick still refuses to acknowledge that Americans love plain ketchup.

I'm not usually a fan of ketchup on anything except for hamburgers and french fries, but like Richard W., I tried the jalapeno ketchup on an MRE chicken breast a few months ago. It was surprisingly good - I like the hot flavor. Oh well...good idea...bad implementation.
