Done with MREs

I recently went on a three-day fishing trip during which I ate mostly MREs, both military and commercial. By the end of those days, I had sworn off MREs forever. I can now truly understand why our troops hate them so much. Bags of junk food would be the most charitable description. I used to enjoy MREs but now realize that I ate them only singly and weeks apart. As a steady diet, they're horrible.

I can make better, more wholesome, and better tasting meals buying shelf stable foods at Walmart. And so I will.

Your feelings?

I agree! Even in the Military we are pretty much guaranteed 1 hot meal a day. If you are ever stuck eating 3 MRE's a day your life is very bad.

You are certainly correct, RockyRaab. I still enjoy them for a single meal occasionally, but when I'm hiking or camping I still take a variety of other stuff like store-bought shelf-stable food items and MH freeze-dried stuff. I'd love to have a home freeze-dryer someday. The FSR's are some of the worst. They look like Natick raided the shelves of the 7-11 down the street for a majority of the contents.

I own a few US MREs as collectibles. Not really interested in eating them. Most, like the pizza ration is geared fora 5th graders school lunch. I enjoy French RCIRs and never had a digestive issue or thought I could get tired of eating those great cans of goodness.

I tend to store and eat Freeze dried meals these days as opposed to just MRE's, Though I do still have a few in storage.

I agree. The new compressed package does not hold up well compared to the heavy plastic bags. Many of the mains suck a monkeys' ass. There are still several 'gold-items' in certain menu's. But I think can count those on both hands. Still yet, think of the purpose, in the field, and nothing else to put in belly.

If you can, get a fresh Pizza Pepperoni and Pizza Cheese, get them both really hot, some way, then mash them together and make a double pizza sandwich. Getting them really hot in the packet, is the hard part. If possible, put a few dabs of olive oil on top of each, before mashing them.
