Age freezedried canned kitchen supply (B rations)

Post by housil » Sat Jan 29, 2022 5:16 pm

I have a bunch of canned soups and beverages.

They have some "markings":

but today I got a can of freeze dried peppers with no markings on, any suggestions about the date/age?

I wish I had facts to point to... But I have always thought these cans were likely from the 1970's to late 1980's. I think cans from the Vietnam era and before were green in color (including these large #10 B-Ration cans). I once had a #10 can of dehydrated chili with beans that was green in color before, I mixed the contents with boiling water and it tasted perfectly fine.

Now there are still #10 cans that come in the UGR rations but they usually have some kind of paper label on them and are basically commercially packaged type food (corn, beans, etc.)

More clues may lie in the fact that the foods are preserved with Sulfur Dioxide... Perhaps this would be a good starting point to research?

Housil, I think asking the manufacturer is a good start. By the way, that can of chili con carne with beans is exactly the same as the one I ate many years ago!

Salty Croc had mentioned that since it's post 1963 when the Zip Codes came into place.

Gel Spice Company Inc. has been around from 1955 to present.

I can't find for sure when Natural Seasoning Co was encorporated, but they show up in a Register of Emergency Producers in 1988, and one of those free company profile website says 1974 (if that can be believed).
All the best, Gents.
