Really neat to see of this as you pull it out. Super interesting how much effort the guy out into making viable hime assembled LRP rations. Cant wait to see what kind of military issued LRPs you got with this lot.

Whoever this man was, he was pretty dedicated on creating his own custom LRPs. I'm guessing he wanted to make sure to have MREs that would last a long time and can be handed out easy.

Keep the pics coming this is pretty cool stuff. I would definitely would like to grab some of those custom packs for kinda of a novelty (oh heck, and taste!).
ancienttyreal,

Many of the boxes in the basement - some that I now have - had names of people on them: I'm pretty sure sons & sons-in-law. In addition to the food that I got there were other things: Emergency Blankets ("Space Blanket"), fire starters, matches, etc. It would be interesting to know where the "Rally Point" was going to be.

Thanks for the kind words!

Best regards,

Scott

There was this white card in a couple of the MRE Case Boxes... does that go with anything?

Any way to date these LRP's? I didn't see any obvious Date Codes.

That's pretty much it! There are a couple of loose items in the box that had all the Accessory Packets. I'll post them tomorrow but we're pretty much at the end of this.

Wow, that's an amazing haul. I don't know if you've checked prices these days, but they are expensive. With the exception of those single serving (MRE) fruits, all of the freeze-dried items should be perfectly edible and wholesome. The wet pack fruits (and entree items) ... not so much.

I recognize the Mountain House packaging styles as from the 1980s, i ate a lot of those on the trails, should be able to find date codes on the pouches. They were much better about offering single ingredients back then. Sausage patties are like gold, brother! They don't offer those anymore. The LRRPs would be collectible to some, of course. I ate a lot of those too. Keep in mind when they say "ready to eat in 10 minutes" if you soak them overnight, that won't hurt anything.

Tedster,

I contacted Mountain House about those items... They sent me a "decoder ring" Date Code Chart. At first I wasn't finding the codes and then I finally found them on the bottom part of the package. The codes were typically hidden in a "fold" of the packaging. Looks like very late 70's to very early 80's are the years on those. My contact at Mountain House seemed to indicate that the company had taste tested products from that era and they had been found to be in good condition. Regardless, 40 year old Tuna Salad - Freeze Dried or no - seems sketchy. HA!

Are you aware of any way to obtain a date range on the various LRP packages I have?

I have no idea how the original owner acquired them but I suspect, due to the variety of packaging and manufacturers, they were surplus items. Ft Gillem (located on the southeast side of Atlanta, GA) used to be a supply depot of some sort and, back before the InterWeb, I myself attended a few Defense Department Auctions there. Could be the original owner obtained them at such an auction or via some Army Surplus Store nearby (likely the later).

Based on the suppositions that they were surplus and they were acquired at about the same time (1987) as the dated individual items, I would assume the LRP rations are from the late 70's early 80's but I have no real evidence to base that on. Hoping some gurus here might have some thoughts on that.

Since you mentioned "...checked the prices..." I did see a guy on eBay selling what appears to be the same as some of mine and, yes, at $40 each (shipped) those seem to be very expensive!

I probably will sell these LRP rations (and other stuff). I'm trying to figure out what's the going rate and then offer them here for a bit of a discount from that.

We'll see how that goes.

Best regards,

Scott
