In my opinion, the LRRP rations in the green bag are from the 1970's and the LRRP rations in the brown bag could either be from the late 1970's, or probably more likely the 1980's.

Don't sell that stuff, the reality is you might need it someday. Wish I was joking. "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst."

Tedster,

Thank you very much for your thoughtful post.

I am quite prepared... HA! ...so I'll probably sell a lot of these items.

Best regards,

Scott

Today I decided to strip out the individual components of the Clear Plastic Home Assembled LRP's. I also stripped out the components of couple of the Brown Bag Home Assembled LRP's where the Brown Bag had become the Brown-Scraps-of-Plastic.

No surprises here. In each clear packet was a meat patty (Beef or Pork) and a packet of fruit (mostly peaches but some strawberries).

Moved to the next box that had clear packages in it along with some brown bags.

These packages were thicker clear plastic. They had a cracker, a meat patty, a fruit packet and a spread of some type (cheese, peanut butter, apple jelly or grape jelly).

Then came a surprise...

Some of them (maybe 9) had Accessory Packets and of those, 6 were Accessory Packets that had cigarettes in them. Up to this point I hadn't found any Accessory Packets with cigarettes.

Inexplicably, this one appears to have had the Chewing Gum removed and then it was resealed at the bottom.

What the heck was that about? HA!

4 of these Accessory Packets with the cigarettes have a M-4 on the bottom of the package while the remaining two have M-5. Anyone have an idea what those markings mean?

It might have been something to do with training, maybe those are genuine issue surplus. Kind of a stretch, but something similar along those lines, I was in Basic or maybe it was AIT, the senior drill sergeant did not allow any of his charges to chew gum, even though it was included in accessory packs. I recall they made us turn it in. One fellow, naturally, was caught chewing gum. They set him down and made him chew ALL the gum that had been turned in up to that point, ended up being a wad of gum about the size of tennis ball.

"Want some more GUM, private? Huh!? Here..."

Tedster,

HA! Possibly but ...I would think the cigarettes would have been removed as well. As it turns out the package wasn't really sealed at the bottom or the seal had failed and I was able to look at the contents. The cigarettes were still in there - Benson & Hedges.

When I was going through Aviation Officer Candidate School in 79/80, we had reduced priviliages until we passed a Room, Locker & Personnel Inspection. No dessert at chow, no smoking for the guys that smoked, no alcohol and NO COFFEE! Honestly, that last one was the worst for me. HA!

As soon as we passed that inspection at about the 4 week point, a couple of us went across the street from our battalion to an exchange snack bar and got a hot fudge sunday and a beer. It tasted awful but it was the principal of the thing, HA!

What REALLY tasted good the next morning (after some light exercise and a little run) was that first cup of coffee at breakfast.

Best regards,

Scott

Today I noticed an eBay auction for a single LRRP.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/124692886984?ul_noapp=true

What got my attention was:

1. It appeared to be identical to the grey/green ones I got at the Estate Sale.

2. He dated it at around 1969!

I sent him a query about the date and he was kind enough to quickly respond to my question as follows:

Scott,
I'd be happy to answer anything ask. I can tell you with complete certainty that it's '69. I was with the 1st Marine Division and served mostly around Quang Nam Province and in the Chu Lai environs from 1969 to April of 1970. I had a friend in1st Force Recon who loaded me up with 6 or 8 LRRP's as an alternative to C Rations. At some point after returning home I dumped the contents of my seabag, mostly uniforms, and this particular ration fell out. I had absolutely no idea how it got there. I've carried it from move to move losing some other things along the way but that Ration was always there and has been in a closet for over 50 years. The only issue is the labeling has diminished a bit and only the description of the contents
remain but not the date. It reads "FOOD PACKET LONG RANGE PATROL. It's a chicken and rice meal. Only the best for a grunt gourmet.

So it sure sounds like this type of LRP packaging was used as early as 1969.

Last night I decided to examine the contents of the "opened" Accessory Packet that had had the Chewing Gum removed.

"Chewing Gum" has been stricken from the listing of the contents.

After photographing everything, I put the contents back inside the pouch as I had found them.
