Rations gone bad (MRE horror)

Post by Nawt » Fri Nov 16, 2007 3:16 pm

Hi guys,

I tought it might be usefull to start a new topic. Had searched for similar topics but couldn't really list it somewhere. So if you find anything that fits this one please let us enjoy it too (the smell is still your personal experience :D )

So despite our efford to keep our rations properly stored, sometimes you come across one that welcomes you first. My nose led me to a smelly British arctic ration from '93. (sorry but I don't have pictures of my first MRE that was not consumable anymore :( )

the smell of cheese....ow man..

Oh man...you can keep that smell to yourself. :-)

That packaging definitely doesn't look like it was meant to last for 14 years.

I almost had a similar situation with a bunch of German EPa's I received. The outside of the cases were fine but inside a number of rations, some of the spreads and cheeses had banged into other entrees and gotten punctured. The punctures were only a few months old but I can imagine what it would have been like if they'd gone undetected for much longer!

I posted some pics of the punctured items but I couldn't find the thread with a quick search.

Seven years sounds like a pretty good number for keeping around stock of the stuff you actually plan on eating. Well...eating for survival. Then there are nutcases like myself (and mreheater72 and his 29 year old nut rolls) who consider it a challenge to find the oldest, but still edible, MRE/MCI/c-ration/k-ration/jar of pickles from the Civil War.

I haven't seen any MRE's gone bad, but i did open up an MRE a while ago where the Jam/Jello-spread had broken up, and i'd had spread through a lot the MRE which was all sticky. Luckily you can wipe most of it right of.

i use to wash the other mre parts that are okay in mild soap
water, and dry them totaly.
you can also dip them in clorine water to dissinfect parts that are okay.
cheers norge

yep, '93. It is/was part of my collection (since it's the only British arctic rat I have) and not meant for consumption anymore.

Rotation varies from anywhere between 5-10 years, depending on the type of ration.
