Brown Bag Menu Question

Post by Kays1968 » Tue Jul 21, 2020 10:17 am

Quick question, I'm checking out my first brown bag ration. The bag is labelled as "Menu No 10" "Spaghetti With Meat And Sauce" and a few of the date codes are 0283, 0308, 0288. So, I'm figuring 1991 ration, but when I check the menus page on this site, no year has spaghetti as menu 10. The spaghetti menu is consistently listed throughout the years as menu 5, until it moved to 20 in 1997. Can someone explain this?

Sorry about the poor picture quality, the dark bags are hard to photograph.

Maybe somebody else can confirm but I feel like I heard that during the brown bag era there were sometimes civilian versions floating around that would have differing menus than the military issue. Or it could be a substitution from the manufacturer.

I feel like this goes back perfectly to your post the other day Zed about rations having different items than they are supposed to. :)

I'm certain this is military, because the components were a perfect match to the Spaghetti With Meat Sauce menu, including accessory pack B contents. It's just the number that's off.

And thanks for the link, interesting thread!

It's been my experience (with current rations, anyway) that late dated components tend to show up in bags early the following year. With two months left on these, they certainly could have been late 1990. Thank you for the response!

I might have sold you a very rare one! I never really paid attention to the menu numbers, but that is certainly a thinker... Maybe it was a substitution meal?? From time to time there are menus that don't appear on the menu lists (Ex: 1982 Beefsteak). Very interesting! Anyway, I'm glad they arrived safely. I tried to pack them well.
