Ok I was helping a my dads friend get stuff out of a house his parents sold. I walk into the barn and he was looking into a box. He was trying to quiz me the entire day. Do you know what this is etc. He must think I'm not that smart because I'm 17. Anyways he pulls these cans (5 1/2" wide, 8.5" long and 13" tall). With crackers in them. He says they are surplus probably 40 years old. THen he opend them and we each tried, one. No bad just a little hard. May I ask if the US have had crackers in plastic in a Metal can similiar to the size that I mentioned. It has some writing on them but most of it is covered in rust and I have no clue how to clean it. Thank you for your time

Are the cans gold in color? If so, they could possibly be old US Civil Defense survival crackers intended for stocking fallout shelters in the late 50s, 60s, & early 70s.

Yes

By the way `Butler, if any of those cans are in decent condition or are salvagable, there is a market out there for all things Civil Defense related (especially if you have the original cardboard shipping boxes/cases).

Who would have thought? :o

I'll post a picture, later. Though I don't think they would be worth anything.

Does anyone know how to clean rust off of the civilian defense cracker cans. Sorry I havn't posted in a while but I was watching Lost worlds (US bunkers) and one of the bunkers had the exact same can of crackers but with no rust.

I took a tour of the 'Carlsberg caverns', back in the early 70's. There was a very large pile of 55 gallon drums filled with those crackers, as well as water.
It might keep you alive, but 2-3 weeks of crackers and water... bletch !!!
