Hi guys,
yesterday I found some funny picture: A GI wears eye protection made from a C-ration container to prevent snow blindness.

Can anyone make out what meal it was from?

I'm not sure exactly but at the bridge of his nose I can barely make out what looks to be a "C" and right underneath it I think it says "B-1" unit. Could be the "Eggs, Chopped w/Ham" unit?

When I was in my first enlistment, only RTO's were issued a large ALICE pack with a frame, so the rest of us used the medium packs without a frame. Terrible set-up for carrying heavy loads.
It was common practice in my unit to cut a piece of of the thick cardboard from a C Ration case to fit in your ruck between the load and your back. It added little weight and kept the hard, pointy stuff in the pack from jabbing you in the back.
If it was OK to make fire and smoke, we'd crunch the individual C-Rat boxes down around the opened can with the main meal in it and light it. By the time it burned down, the can was good and hot.
