MRE Water?

Post by Amelieee1 » Sun Jul 14, 2019 11:54 am

The other day I was browsing Ebay usa and saw a retourt pouch which the seller labelled at emergancy water, it said water on the pouch in the little dots and the listing has since dissapeared. Anyone know where/how to find or get these because I think this is kind of weird...

Edit: it got relisted; https://www.ebay.com/itm/Emergency-Surv ... SwttVaPX4e

Looking at it more, it appears that there are e types of emergency drinking water, with different spout locations. There's also sterile drinking water, which comes in a mini Jerry can.

What are you going to do with 4.2oz? You'd have to carry 6-8 of these things for your average MRE meal.

Emergency water used to come in cans roughly the size of soda cans. The water was vacuum-packed and if you shook the can, it sounded like there was a solid slug inside. No slosh, just "clunk". It was a standard life raft item, as well as fallout shelter supplies.

Later, they switched to pouches for weight and space saving but also decreased the amount. The purpose is not for daily use, obviously. It is truly an emergency item.

As a side note, when I flew in 'Nam, we had those cans available, but virtually nobody carried them. We much preferred a plastic pint hip flask or two stashed in our leg pockets if we wore a flight suit, or cargo pockets when we flew in camo fatigues. Hip flasks were flatter and curved: MUCH more likely to actually be with you if you had to bail out or crash and run.

These pouches are also available in civilian labels, for use on emergency life rafts and in "abandon ship" bags. They are much cheaper, around $0.40 each plus shipping if you have to mail order them. I can buy them in my local outdoor store or you can get them on ebay or amazon. The brand name is Datrex, which is the same company that makes life raft rations and emergency survival food bars in the vacuum packed retort pouches. There are probably also other brand names available.

These pouches are reasonably strong and can withstand freezing with no issues. They are usually white with blue lettering since they are used on boats. I've never seen one in olive drab military packaging before.

I usually carry a few as a backup to bottled water or canteen in my earthquake kit in my car, since they last at least 5 years. I think I've seen maybe one of them leak in 20 years or so.

The pouch size is only 4.2 ounces, so you will need quite a few of them.
