So, I originally had the idea while drunk, but the next morning I actually thought more about it and decided it might actually have some merit.
College kids are lazy. A lot of them don't want to cook and even if they did, they wouldn't have the time. They eat junk food and fast food, and I know a lot of them eat out of cans (I was one of them, before I got my own apartment)
So, what about a self-contained, full meal that comes in a pouch and contains everything a college kid would need for a meal. A meal, ready to eat, if you will. (Ain't I clever?)
Of course, you'd have to pack in instant coffee. Which coffee types have you felt to be the best? I've heard Type II is good, but I've only ever had Type III. Perhaps a civilian/consumer version of that sort of coffee, like Nescafe, Taster's Choice, or Folgers?
I think also caffeinated chocolate would be a good addition. Awake is a company that makes some pretty good caffeinated chocolate (dark is my favorite).
You could have different menu types for vegetarian, kosher, and halal, depending on people's dietary restrictions if they have them.
What other ideas do you think would be good for college-grade MREs? Even down to the name! I was thinking something like Operational Sustenance Unit (OSU )

Going off my experience in university, All you’d really need to do is pack some pepperoni, beef jerky, and coffee into the void space between the bottle necks. A two-four (24 beer) was my coping mechanism to get through all those Calculus and Engineering courses.

What's your favorite type of MRE coffee?

I've actually used a lot my Spanish rations this way, when I'm in the exam month I barely have no time to even breathe... Before exams I make sure I have a decent stock of Rations in the wardrobe and if lunch time comes, just pop one open, heat it with the stove on the table and munch as I study...
I'd say a low sodium comercial ration should do the trick, low in electrolites for a ration, by that I mean with the ammount a normal person needs for daily activities...
Probably would be good with more snacks/drinks and smaller entrees

When I went to college, we were required to live in the dorm and purchase a meal plan. Dining hall food wasn't great for what the plan cost, but it was filling and there was lots of it.

They don't do that any more?

I can't help here. I commuted to college, a half-hour each way. I ate at home or wherever I could. I also carried 16 to 18 credit hours a semester, and worked 20 hours a week to help pay my tuition. And all that was a half century ago.

In Spain I study outside of my city, you can rent a room in a shared flat or rent a full flat with colleagues... Student residences that include meals and such exists but are a minority and its mostly for first year students that are afraid of living alone and cooking for themselves
Here in Italy there is also a cantine/mensa in the university where you can have a 3 course meal paying 1€ to 3€ depending on your economic level

Yes, "predatory" is an excellent word to describe US higher education pricing.

Up here on-campus dining is expensive. I'm talking $9 for a slice of pizza and a beverage.
