But as for that spoon...as much as I love those MRE spoons, I've found they aren't as durable as I once thought. I usually keep one in my kit when I'm travelling (and I've been travelling a lot). You just never know when you'll need a spoon. But I've found that after about 4-6 months of just sitting in my bag and getting occasional use, it gets brittle and the head eventually breaks off with just the slightest pressure.
I share my experience with kman: The brown MRE spoons are disposable spoons! The old white one were much better. I use one in work for about two years to stir my cup of coffee every morning, it is still as new!

My parents using a white spoon from a 1982 REFORGER in their sugar jar still today.
The color changed a little bit to a "dirty yellow", but it is still working...

They packed the old white spoons in the early MRE's. Those short ones were OK for C-Rat cans, but were not suited to digging all the goodness out of the corners of an MRE pouch. It was hard not to get your filthy fingers in the food.

The long brown spoons were a good idea.

(BTW- What the heck is a "racing spoon"?)

New asshat

Post by kman » Mon Mar 05, 2007 5:51 pm

Ok guys, here's a new one. Talk about clueless...

http://cgi.ebay.com/50-MRE-meal-ready-t ... RCH:US:101

This guy says he has 50 "entrees" for sale...but if you read the description in detail, it sounds more like it has 50 old Wornick Mil-Spec civilian MREs for sale. The tip-off that it's the old Wornick stuff is the list of entrees - "Vegetarian Pasta Fagioli" and "Turkey with Savory Vegetables" is a dead giveaway.

So forget that he's selling 8 year old civilian MREs as "new".

And forget that he's asking for $70 flat rate shipping.

My favorite part is this part of his description:
For a picture of what this looks like, please see eBay Item number:200013703897. While not a picture of my units, mine look nearly identical, except with different lettering and content.
Wow...they look identical - except for the lettering and content!

That last auction got me thinking - I really need to come up with an icon/logo for all these eBay asshats. You have be really careful when googling for "asshat" when you're at work :-) , but here's a good image I just ran across:

I've got a new eBay asshat for everyone:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Military-MRE-Entree ... dZViewItem

This guy has a ton of various entrees and sides for sale. His asking price of $2.95 per entree is high, but not unreasonable. But check out the shipping - he says "We NEVER charge a mark-up on shipping" but this one single entree will cost $9.18 to ship to North Carolina from California.

If I change the zip code to the same city where the seller is, the cost is reduced to a mere $7.96.

If I bump up the quantity to 10, the shipping only jumps $3 so it's obvious this guy is front-loading the shipping costs.

Do yourself a favor if you really want to pay top dollar for MRE entrees - go to http://www.longlifefood.com/ and pay $3 per entree and get FREE SHIPPING.

I really new at buying civilian and military MRE's. I paid $103.33 for two cases of real MRE's, inspection date 09, including shipping. I paid $69.95 for one case of aPack with free shipping. Should I be happy or did I get stung. All abuse acceptable. I gotta learn.
