Thanks for the link, CaptBob! That's not such a bad price. I might have to break down at some point and pick up a case to review.

I think the weight thing is probably 2lbs for each MRE - so that'd be around 24lbs per case.

I was going to take some pictures of the case of Eversafe meals that Wornick sent me, but in the meantime, someone's got three cases on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 8750298002

Looks like

Looks like TOTM.

If I am right the shelf life of a TOTM is shorter than reg MRE.

The TOTM's I have the (Gov't) shelflife of 1 year.

Is this correct Kman. I am going on memory.....which is not good.

Do your TOTMs actually say on them that the shelf life is one year?

The specs on the TOTM say: "The shelf life of the TOTM at the time of delivery to the customer will be no less than 12 months." But that only means that the shelf life must be at least one year. It doesn't state the actual shelf life.

Both the MRE and the TOTM contain essentially the same components, the TOTM simply has fewer calories by eliminating or substituting a side or dessert.

The jambalaya in an MRE would have the same shelf life as one found in a TOTM.

I think CaptBob hit the nail on the head. The wording on the TOTM specs makes it sound like a year but it's really "at least" one year. Other than that, since they contain the exact same parts and pieces, I don't see why they wouldn't last as long as an MRE.

If I had to guess, I'd guess that they don't stockpile TOTMs like they do MREs. So MREs are probably officially kept around for at least three years because they keep a bunch of them in cold storage. But maybe TOTMs aren't kept that long since they're just supposed to be used for garrison and/or training. Just guessing here...

You are right. I knew (one year) was in there somewhere. I actualy like the TOTM for backpacking. Not as bulky. Limited items is the only downside.

For backpacking (or any other activity where you want to reduce your cargo weight), just "field strip" them. You can get rid of a lot of weight and bulk be eliminating the cardboard boxes, bags, and the items you won't use.

I read somewhere that an entire case of MREs can be compressed into four meal bags by getting rid of the cardboard and unwanted items.

That would be, as they say, "High Speed, Low Drag".

I am heading out today going backpacking. (North Alabama) If its a short hump I dont declutter the mre. Longer treks, I do strip them down. This weekend will be a short trek. 45 deg for high, 27 for a low. Gonna need some spirts to keep me warm.

Cheers

Eversafe made a major mistake in their menu

Post by kturnerga » Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:39 am

Hi!
I read about the Eversafe rations. They seem like a wonderful idea aside from the lesser shelf life (vs. MRE's). But...

I want my beef stew! The MRE beef stew will make you slap your granmaw.

Also I would like to see the menus incorporate the meatloaf/gravy/onions. They are sooo good.!

Thanks. BTW this girl I know had MRE's in Peru when she went down there for a mission trip. Where did they get their paws on them legally?
Thanks

She probably got them the same place everyone else gets them - either from Ebay or from an Army/Navy Surplus store. :-)
