Oldest
I got an early '80's LRRP off Ebay about 3 years ago. Green Bag, unopened. Chili Con Carne menu. I think it was packed '82-84. Can't remember. The dehydrated Chili was still very good after re-hydrating it. The round chocolate/cocoanut bar was still solid and good, but I ate only a couple small bites from that. I think Mountain House or Rafco, that made those entree's back then make them better now. It was filling, tasted fair and did'nt kill me. I had the chance to eat an early '80's MCI, about the same time, Beef and Potato slices in gravy, Apricots, B-2(?) unit and a can of cheese. None of the cans were bulging, but I decided not to risk it, and sold the meal to some ex-Marine on the West coast by Ebay.
1996 Peanut Butter-just as passable as day made
Hello
I just finished off some 2002 vintage veggie crackers and a 1996 pack of Peanut Butter. I am still alive and noted no bad taste or odor. I did note some dirt-like taste to the peanut butter but that's probably expected.
I might be fool enough to buy some brown MREs off Ebay. For sure I'll toss the more perishable items. These are the pre-1995 packages I see in the picture.
Ta ta for now

CaptBob just got some first generation (1985) MREs!
Yep. Someone sold a case of twelve to me for three bucks.
What the hell!
Ah, the white spoons! Ah, the "Soup and Gravy Base, Beef-Flavored".
So, I'm looking at some of the weird dehydrated items. The Beef Patty looks like a granola bar in its vacuum sealed packaging.
I figure that the best thing to do with a TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD MRE is eat it, including all components, and let you all know how "it went down".
So, I'll let you decide between three:
Menu 3 - Beef Patty (dehydrated)
Menu 9 - Chicken A La King
Menu 10 - Meatballs in Barbeque Sauce
Which one should CaptBob try?

Haven't yet tried an entree, but yesteday I tried the "Beans and Tomato Sauce" side from the Beef Patty menu.
Surprisingly good for twenty-one years old!
Just as a fine cabernet must age to develop its delicate bouquet, I found that there was, later on, a complex, refined, and distinguished aroma to my farts.
The cheese spread looked very suspect and I did not try it. (Maybe I will later from another menu.) But my two Australian Shepherds didn't complain. The crackers were no different than the contemporary, albeit with a slightly off-chemical odor. The dogs and I shared these.
I couldn't help but open the chocolate-covered brownie. A bit hard to bite into, but not bad.
I will take a pic of the entrees and that Chicken A La King will be shown as well.
I have a Chicken A La King from an RCW that's just sitting out, begging to be lunch or dinner someday as well.
So, yes, no hospital stays for me.
CaptBob is STILL on the job!
