Pizza is Back
Re: Pizza is Back
I ate like 4 pieces cold and it honestly tasted ok to me. Now Parafireboy's post makes me wish I had saved one to eat warmed up! Also glad to see this doesn't have any trans-fat too.
Re: Pizza is Back
Does it taste like a Wheat Snack Bread with Cheese Spread and Tomato? I'm not a pizza snob, but lets be clear. A good pizza crust is what makes a good pizza (imo) and I'm ... skeptical. Great that they are trying, NATICK is something else.

Definitely nice to see that they pulled it off without using trans-fats. For so long the ration items had lots of it, so it was nice to see them start to reduce it a few years ago.

Amazingly, I found that it tasted very similar to the rectangular pizza that they used to serve with school lunches in the 80's. I agree that the crust can really make or break a pizza, but I think they did well. I've only had a few pieces thus far, but I found the crust to be nowhere near as dense as the snack breads. Just right IMO.

Very true, plus the fact that they had to keep moisture content very low as to not impact shelf life.Mpitt wrote: ↑Thu Mar 22, 2018 4:58 pmMy guess is that the cheese will not melt. The cheese was the item that was the most difficult to make self stable as it was turning colors on them in a short time so they probably had to load it up with stabilizers which means you could probably hit it with a blow torch and see no change. NASA might want to think about using these squares as shuttle heat tiles.
Joking aside, I did get one of these from BlackDogBob. I'll be trying it out soon.

Finally! I HATE the Beef Brisket, and it looks like they are bringing in some new stuff by 2020 too!Beyond pizza
If pizza isn’t your thing, beef goulash is on the menu for 2019. MRE No. 39 will offer beef goulash and beef strips in a savory tomato-based sauce.
You’ll have to say goodbye to Asian-style beef strips with vegetables and the beef brisket, though. Those MREs ranked lowest in troop feedback, which included feedback from a 2016 field test at Fort Carson, Colorado.
The Combat Feeding Directorate was looking for replacements for lower-ranking beef entrees, based on average ratings from the past five years.
Looks exiting! Hopefully the next couple years will be filled with fun new stuff!!MRE Menu No. 40 is set to bring a new meal plus a bunch of snacks to troops in training and overseas in 2020:
Italian Sausage in Marinara Sauce
High Protein Pudding, Chocolate
Recovery Crunchy O Shaped Snack
BBQ flavored Recovery Beef Jerky Trail Mix
Sweet and Spicy Recovery Salted Caramel Rice and Soy Crisp Bar
Chocolate Hazelnut Protein Smoothie

Cheers guys

I'm with you on that. People said that the beef brisket was really good. In fact, that statement prompted me to order a case of MREs. Then I tried the beef and didn't find it that good at all when compared to the other menus. Asian beef strips weren't that good either. Maybe I'm biased because I'm Asian and I've got a great beef strip recipeSimon2002mre wrote: ↑Mon Mar 26, 2018 5:45 pm

IMO I much prefer the Vegetarian entrees with the TVP. TVP is a great way to get protein and I honestly can't tell the difference in flavor between that and beef. Chicken entrees come in second for me.
As long as they keep the BBQ Rib Patty I'm happy. I love me some MRE McRibs.

a couple of tips for that MRE:Simon2002mre wrote: ↑Tue Mar 27, 2018 12:09 pmHaha! I have one sitting around so I'l have to try out a McribBut yes, I am exited to see new menus.
- Lightly toast the snack bread. It adds a much needed texture.
- after you heat up the patty, dump out the juice, but keep the patty in the pouch. Pour in some of the BBQ sauce into the pouch and mix and coat the patty. Better flavor distribution. You can also do the mixing in a bowl if you want.
