just might need to email the company as said. This is not the first time this has come up with dating problems. Olie had it too.

Hello, I have 2 6 can case's of this item. Mine was packaged by Oregon Packing Company, Albany, Oregon. 32 patties, total weight 1 pound 14 oz, date packed says march, 1971. I have tried them and they were excellent, dare I say almost fresh smelling..

I remember a guy had dehydrated pork and beef steaks in cans he reviewed, but they were later it seemed.
I dont recall if he discussed dates but they were on the market as surplus recently so they must have been "new". Maybe 90s.

Wasnt this stuff a little more "upmarket" than the Bs? He said that the dehydrated stuff was for govt civilian bunkers and the like.

It may be 60s, especially as the cans hold gas sealed dehydrated stuff, and if just left in a cool dark corner the can would be as new? Just some thought.

Great find again! All the Presidents Dinners!
That review was mine-AFAIK, all of the freeze dried meats used for higher ups and Continuity in Governement came in the 1970's. These meats aren't dehydrated, they are freeze dried-a technology that came from the space program, so the 1960's would have been a little early for commercial processing of steaks for fat generals and senators.

These meats are nitrogen packed and the cans are laquer sealed. Oregon Freeze Dried (the parent company of Mountain House) packed them and still does it this way today. The cans they sell are claimed to be good for 30 years, at which point it was predicted that they would lose some color but the vitamin and caloric content would still be good. They periodically test cans that were made when they started 40 years ago and the products are as good now as then. There was an article I posted in my thread about a guy who bought his cold war stash of Mountain House and stored it in a garage attic until his kids had to come and move him in his old age-they opened a few and they were as good as the day they were canned.

Since there is no water (okay, a few percent by weight), and no air in the can, nothing can grow and the chemistry is suspended. As long as the cans are not breeched, the food should be good basically forever.

Oh, forgot to mention: They made the following products available to the .gov:

Steaks
Pork Chops
Beef Patties
Sausage Patties
Bacon (cooked)
Diced Chicken (Cooked)
Diced Beef (Cooked)
Cottage Cheese

Possibly more, but these are what I know of.

I have 7 cases of steak, 3 cases of pork chops, 3 cases of diced chicken, and one can of Bacon. Most of mine are '89-96 DOP. It's kinda sad, I'm gonna live better after the Zombie Invasion than I do now!

I bet they are absolutely fine

I would eat them now. They are preserved in the most foolproof way yet known. They are essentially preserved in a permanent sealed nitrogen atmosphere, AFTER they have been freeze dehydrated.

They are probably good for another 2 decades.

I'd trust those eggs in 2110 let alone now - sure they're just fine as long as you don't see holes or anything on the can. If it hisses when it's opened it's going to be just as good as the day it went in there!
