I hear u Big_Jo! Kind of ironic that when I had my first drill weekend with my national guard unit, we were still being issued MCIs from the mid-70s and for the 3 months we had them until we got MREs i never got sick from anything in the MCIs, then less than 10 years later in desert storm, with supposedly better ration packaging systems, i got so sick that i was on IVs for several hours! Ah the things we recall!

Weight, convenience, and food texture aside, canned foods are still the better alternative to retort packaging for longer term storage. Here's a web article that some forum members may find interesting (others probably already know it.)

Those are MRE's from my enlistment period. I liked ham and chicken loaf. My favorite was chicken a la king. The pork patty is not bad after you soak it in water for 10 minutes. Of course, I've never eaten 20-year-old food before.
